Benjamin B. Littman M.D. - Perennial Student of Medicine

SOUTHBURY - Benjamin Bertram Littman died peacefully at the Watermark in Southbury at the age of 104 on Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Devoted to his family and beloved by his community, he was the husband of Ruth for 73 years.

Ben was born April 5, 1906 in Austria, the son of Eva (Langer) and Philip Littman. He came to the United States at the age of two. He graduated from College of the City of New York in 1927 and the Medical School of St. Andrew's University, Scotland in 1932.

He practiced medicine in New York beginning in 1932, specializing in cardiology. In the 1960s, he served as the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx. In 1970, he then moved to Florida where he practiced until he was 93-years-old.

Beside his practice, he taught cardiology at New York Medical College and conducted research for the National Institute of Health on the effects of aspirin on the heart.

From 1986 until 2001, he spent every summer residing in Southbury. In March 2005, he moved permanently to the Watermark at East Hill. There, he introduced the Teaching Company to the community, where he also delivered travelogues on Sundays. He was a member of the Writers' Circle and played bridge twice a week.

He is survived by his beloved wife Ruth (nee Wertheimer) of Southbury, CT, his devoted children, Dr. Emily Littman (Dr. Steven Eisen) of Bethlehem, CT and Dr. Jonathan Littman (Lynne Strode) of Oak Park, IL, his loving sister, Edith Fixman, and his adoring grandchildren, Andrew Eisen and Daniel Littman.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations to Littman-Eisen Fund at the Connecticut Community Foundation, 43 Field St., Waterbury, CT.

Cemetery: Mt. Lebanon Cemetery

Location: Munson-Lovetere Southbury

Funeral: B'nai Israel

Services: Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 1 at 10 am at B'Nai Israel, 444 Main St. North, Southbury, CT. Burial will follow in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Glendale, NY at 1pm.
