Obituary

Barry S. Sacks, of Southbury, died Feb. 12 in St. Mary's Hospital, Waterbury, after suffering a heart attack two days earlier. Born in Bronx, New York on Nov. 22, 1959, he was a son of Maxine Sacks, of Heritage Village, Southbury; and the late Jerry Sacks.

A graduate of Ithaca College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in radio and television, Barry began his career as a sportswriter at the Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He then went on to become an Emmy-award winning producer at ESPN, where he worked for 35 years, rising to the position of senior executive producer. He helped launch "Sports Center" and "College GameDay" during his time there.

After leaving ESPN in 2017, he taught sports production classes as part of the sports journalism master's program and sports broadcasting to undergraduate students at Quinnipiac University. He was also an executive producer for the Connecticut Sun of the Women's National Basketball Association. Barry mentored countless young people as they aspired to be as passionate and knowledgeable of sports as he was.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 36 years, Jo Ann Newberry; his son, Jesse and his wife Emily, of Groton, CT;  sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Debbie and David Carey, of Dallas, PA; niece, Mallory Emilien, her husband Wayne and their son Evan, of Poolsville, MD; nephew, DJ Carey and his wife, Maura Gauger, of Weehawken, NJ. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Howard.

Calling hours for Barry will be held Saturday February 18, 2023 from 2:00 - 6:00 P.M.  and Sunday February 19, 2023 from 2:00 - 6:00 P.M at Munson Lovetere Funeral Home, 235 Main Street North, Southbury.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

A celebration of Barry's life will be held at a date and time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in Barry's memory to Companion Pet Rescue or Pan-Mass Challenge.
