Barbara A. Hayes, 77
Barbara Ann Hayes, 77, passed away on December 15, 2016 in Southbury, Connecticut.
Barbara was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on May 10, 1939 to Frank and Anna Carey. She was raised with her two sisters, Eleanor and Susan, in Arlington, Virginia. Barbara graduated from the Georgetown University School of Nursing in 1960 and received her Masters of Arts in education from NYU College of Nursing in 1963.
Throughout her career, Barbara worked in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, focusing on high risk clients, and aiding those in a community setting. She taught Lamaze classes for many years, including to pregnant teens and women in prison. She was very involved with the Lactation Consortium of Westchester/Rockland/Putnam, NY. Barbara was involved in a variety of clubs and charitable organizations, including the March of Dimes, investment clubs, current events clubs, book clubs, and most recently, was elected as secretary to the Residents' Counsel at Pomperaug Woods Retirement Community.
She moved with her husband, the late Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., to Hershey, Pennsylvania where he was the Director of Clinical Pharmacology at the Pennsylvania State University Medical School and to Washington, D.C., where he served as the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration under President Ronald Reagan. After Dr. Hayes' tenure at the FDA, they moved to New Rochelle, New York. In 2005, the Hayes' settled in Oxford, Connecticut to be closer to their family. After her husband's death, Barbara moved to Pomperaug Woods Retirement Community in Southbury, Connecticut.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, and her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Waller-Hayes of Overveen, The Netherlands.
She is survived by her children, Arthur Hull Hayes III (married to Lisa) of Westport, Connecticut, and Katherine Saracino (married to Robert) of Oxford, Connecticut, her son-in-law Arnoud Waller of Overveen, The Netherlands, and eight grandchildren.

Funeral: St. Thomas the Apostle

Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 733 Oxford Road, Oxford, CT at 10: 00 am on Wednesday, December 21, 2016.

Visitation: Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at the Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 Main St. North, from 4: 00 - 7: 00 pm.
