Obituary

Arthur W. Hinkson, of Woodbury, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2008, at his home surrounded by his family. Arthur, or Artie, as he was also affectionately known, was born Feb 24, 1929 to Louise (King) Hinkson and Christopher M. Hinkson, in Brooklyn, NY.

A quiet, easy-going man, Arthur enjoyed his life, filling it with many interests and activities, including aviation, electronics, science and nature, music, travel, and spending time with his family. He was a self-taught man who had a clear mind for all things electronic and mechanical. A former long-time resident of Farmingdale, NY, Arthur spent 39 years working as an avionics and mechanical inspector for Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage, NY, before retiring to Southbury, CT, and then finally to Woodbury, CT. At home, preferring science to sports, he spent many hours in his workshop testing, fixing, tinkering with, and creating better designs for, various electronic devices and gadgets. A generous man with his time, his workshop always contained other people's TVs or radios that needed fixing, which he did without hesitation.

In addition to working with electronics, Arthur enjoyed flying and boating, owning two planes and a boat over the course of his life. He took his family on extended vacations, driving across the country and exploring the geography of the land. An inventor in his own right and full of ideas, Arthur developed a number of interesting items, even gaining a patent on what came to be known to all as the car game. He always carried a small booklet of graph paper in his shirt pocket to draft out his ideas as they came to him. He also thoroughly enjoyed listening to classical music and playing the accordion, piano and organ.

Arthur is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne (Dessert) Hinkson, with whom he shared 50 wonderful years of his life, their three children, Jane, Richard and Alan, daughters-in-law Frances and Kristine, two grandchildren, Heidi and Alan, two brothers, Walter and Lawrence, brothers- and sisters-in-law, Paul, Freddy, Janelle, Margaret, and Arlene, and many nieces and nephews. Arthur was predeceased by two brothers, John and George.
