Obituary

Arthur O. Enger, 91, of Woodbury, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013 at his home. He was the husband of the late Solveig Olsen Enger. A former resident of Michigan, at the end of 2012, Mr. Enger moved to Woodbury to live with his niece, Nancy DeGrazia and her family. He was born April 5, 1922 in Portland, Oregon, the second son of the late Ole and Caroline Enger. Moving to Alpena County, MI in 1934, he was educated in that county's schools and graduated from Alpena High School in 1941 as salutatorian of his class. At the outbreak of WW II, he joined the army as an aviation cadet and received his pilot's wings in 1943. He served in the 13th Air Force in the South Pacific area flying fifty missions before returning to the United States where he spent the rest of the war as a troop carrier command pilot instructor. After the war, Mr. Enger attended Michigan State University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry in 1951. Serving as an Air Force Reserve Captain, he was recalled to active duty in 1952, the latter part of the Korean War. He served stateside until 1955. Returning to civilian status, he continued his education and earned a Master's Degree in Forestry. He then started his career as a forester, land appraiser and land surveyor with the Michigan Department of Natural resources, retiring in 1980. He then moved to Harlingen, Texas and became active in the Confederate Air Force which was based there. In 1956, Mr. Enger married Solveig Olsen of Mt. Kisco, NY who preceded him in death on February 9, 2000, after forty three years of marriage. He is survived by several nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers, Bernhard and Carl.

Services: He will be buried next to his wife and with other family members in the Leer Lutheran Church Cemetery in Long Rapids Township, MI.
