Anthony E. Luther, Jr., 85, died Monday, April 8, 2013 at home after a brief
illness. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Gwynne) Luther.
Tony Luther was born June 11, 1927 in Manhattan, to parents Anthony and
Charlotte. He had served with the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. An
active volunteer in his community, he brought football to Southbury, co-founding
its original Pop Warner teams. He was an active member of the Southbury
Volunteer Ambulance Association for over 20 years, having served as president
and head driver. He served as president of both the Lions Club and the
Southbury Business Association. A land developer in Southbury, he was active in
many construction projects in town. He served as Chairman of the Town Hall and
Library Building Committees for the Main Street South building, coming in under
budget and on time with both projects. He served as Town Hall meeting moderator
for over 10 years. Tony's passion, however, was racing cars as a professional
driver, as well as restoring vintage cars until his recent illness.
He is survived by his son, Anthony E. Luther III of Shelton; his daughter, Laura
Lee Szerszen of Fairfield; a step-daughter, Linda McCarthy of MA; his best
friend Jeanne Hackenson of Southbury; sisters Charlotte Madar of Shelton and Joy
Snedeker of FL; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services: Burial will be held on Friday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Southbury.
