Obituary

Anne R. Hutchins - Orsi, 61, of Washington, CT died peacefully at home, February 27, 2023 from complications of multiple sclerosis, surrounded by her family.  Diagnosed with a severe case of MS in 1990, Anne persevered with fortitude during the thirty-three years she lived with the disease.

Born February 1, 1962 in Glen Cove, NY, daughter of the late Waldo and Joan (Adams) Hutchins, and stepdaughter of the late Carol (Fennelly) Hutchins.  Anne is survived by her husband of 23 years James Monell Orsi.

Anne's sense of style and strong personality remained intact through  significant progression of MS.  A natural athlete, Anne loved swimming, tennis and bike riding in  her youth. She also loved hiking, especially in the Adirondacks where she spent summers climbing most of the forty-six 4,000-foot-High Peaks.

A graduate of St. Paul's School ('80), Yale ('84 BA  Architecture) Anne was a star varsity field hockey player,  including the 1980 Ivy League championship team.  Anne spent a month in a NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) survival program in the Wind River Range of Wyoming 'just to try something fun.'  She worked in San Francisco in landscape design before continuing at the University of Virginia ('90 MLA landscape architecture).

After UVA, Anne worked as a designer with the Central Park Conservancy, honoring the memory of her great-great grandfather Waldo Hutchins (1822-1891), a member of the first Central Park Board of Commissioners who managed the design and construction of Central Park.  She then founded her own landscape design firm based in Manhattan and Washington, CT where Anne and her husband James spent the last 20 years.

Anne is also survived by three siblings John Hutchins (Anda), Fred Hutchins (Maree Gaetani), Elizabeth Hutchins and stepsiblings Andree Welsh (Jack) and John Devendorf (Connie) and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Anne's memory may be made to the Tisch Multiple Sclerosis Research Center of New York, 521 West 57th St, New York, NY 10019 www.tischms.org or the Central Park Conservancy, 717 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10022 www.centralparknyc.org.
