Obituary

Anne P. Delo passed away peacefully in her home on December 5, 2020, at the age of 76.  Born Martha Anne Phillips in Lakeland, Florida, Anne was a fourth-generation Floridian and the daughter of Captain Joseph Smith Phillips (USN) and Martha Douglas Dabney Phillips.

As a Navy "brat," Anne lived in 15 cities before the age of 18, including Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan; Manila, Philippines; Key West; Newport; Annapolis, and Coronado. Anne attended Emory University and graduated from the University of South Florida.  She began a corporate career at The Travelers in Hartford in the 70s and advanced to senior-level corporate positions in the 80s and 90s.  She served as Director of Benefits at GTE Corporation with a two-billion-dollar benefits portfolio and later as VP of Human Resources at GTE Directories in Dallas, where she reorganized and managed domestic and international operations.  She ended her corporate career where she began at The Travelers, this time as VP of Human Resources for the insurer's personal lines businesses in Connecticut, New Jersey, and Florida.  Anne was a trailblazer for women in the corporate world and inspired young women to pursue leadership roles.

After retirement, Anne dedicated herself to her greater Waterbury community, reading with Literacy Volunteers and driving fellow Woodbury residents to medical appointments in the FISH (Friends In Service Here) program.  She was passionately devoted to her service on the Board of Directors of the Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition and as a trustee of the Connecticut Community Foundation, with a special commitment to the Women's Fund and Western Connecticut Leadership Program.

Anne enjoyed a rich life, appreciating simple pleasures like gardening and golf, as well as extensive travel. She touched the lives of so many people with her special gift for connecting old friends with new and was much beloved by all who came to know her.  She will be lovingly remembered for her radiant smile, razor sharp wit, delight in entertaining and organizing talent shows with friends and her extensive lipstick collection.

Anne was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease in 2016, after which she required constant oxygen support.  An inspiration to many, with portable oxygen at hand, she maintained her fitness training and attended exercise classes at the Woodbury Senior Center.  In October 2018, with 4½ hours' notice, she drove to UPenn in Philadelphia for a lung transplant. Throughout these daunting health challenges and her final battle with cancer, she was strong, courageous and funny- always ready with a honed opinion honeyed with an abundance of southern charm.

Anne is survived by her wife attorney Rosemary E. Giuliano of Woodbury who will cherish their 36 years of treasured memories.  She also leaves behind her sister, Dabney Mann and Dabney's husband Douglas of Tennessee; her sister Mary Ray of Florida; her nephews Douglas and Andrew Mann, Douglas's wife Kelly, all of Tennessee; her niece Beth Puttick, Beth's husband Michael; her nephew Christopher Edwards, his wife Ashley, of Florida and many great nieces and nephews.

Affectionately known as "Miss Anne" "Anne Delo" and "Lady Anne," she lived her life with dignity, grace and class.  These qualities gave Anne a force of energy that lit up a room and she made herself a home in innumerable hearts, where that light will continue to shine.

A celebration of Anne's extraordinary life and inextinguishable spirit will be held when health regulations allow.
