Obituary

Alice E. Holmes passed away on February 2, 2025 at the age of 95 at Pomperaug Woods in Southbury, CT where she has resided since 2020 after moving from her home in Sandy Hook, CT.

Alice was born in Horton, Kansas on November 25, 1929 to Rider and Alice Minerva Stockdale. Her older siblings were fraternal twins Rider and Ridera Stockdale Klapproth. Her family eventually settled in Austin, Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Biology and was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She married Howard H. Holmes in December 1950 and they began a journey of life together that would take them from Austin to Tulsa, OK, Doylestown, PA and eventually to Sandy Hook, CT.

Alice was a longtime Girl Scout leader and a well-regarded substitute biology teacher in the Doylestown, PA school system. Upon moving to Sandy Hook, CT in 1975, she worked for the State of Connecticut Energy Extension program as the "Energy Lady" educating people and businesses about conservation and alternative energy sources. Upon the death of her beloved husband in 1984, Alice discovered her true work passion, real estate.

A licensed realtor since 1986, she held advanced realty certifications of ABR(accredited buyer representative), CRS(certified residential specialist) and GRI(Graduate Realtors Institute) designations. She worked for Raveis Realty, William Pitt -Sotheby's; then, at the age of 85, joined Berkshire Hathaway in Newtown. She lived and breathed real estate and loved helping people find a new home or assisting them in relocating from the local area. She was actively involved on numerous committees of the Newtown Board of Realtors, served as president of the Board and was the recipient of the Newtown Realtor of the Year Award. Her encyclopedic knowledge of real estate transactions over 30 plus years led to her being designated the informal "historian" among her colleagues. It wasn't an uncommon muttering to hear "Go ask Alice, she'll know." She enjoyed mentoring new realtors and was active in many national and state legislative political affairs related to real estate.

Alice was a longtime member of the Newtown United Methodist Church and served on a variety of church committees as well as being a co-lay leader.

Alice is survived by her daughters Shelley Walker (Christopher) and Katherine Hoelscher (James). Her son, Howard Michael (Little Mike) who sadly died at the age of four. She was extremely proud of her four granddaughters Cameron Hoelscher Calkins(Jamie), Erica Walker, Alexandra Walker and Stephanie Hoelscher Garris (John). She has two great grandchildren, Callahan and Lucy.

A celebration of life reception will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025 from 3-5pm at Marygold's On Main in Newtown, CT. Memorial contributions can be made to Lions Low Vision Centers of Fairfield & New Haven Counties, Inc. 23 Barnabas Road, Suite 212 Hawleyville, CT 06440.
