IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alan Lee
Blau
July 2, 1933 – December 4, 2020
On Friday December 4, 2020, Alan Lee Blau, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away at the age of 87. Alan was born in Brooklyn, NY to Helen and Isadore Blau. On April 7, 1968 he married Sybil Ravitz and together they raised two daughters, Caroline and Sarah. He received his PhD in American History from City University of New York in 1973, writing an impressive 646 page thesis. Alan was known to be a passionate, knowledgeable teacher who inspired and was adored by his students. His passion kept him teaching, until his health no longer allowed it, a career spanning over 55 years. Alan had two main hobbies, the first was his love of music, though never a performer himself, his spare time was spent listening to opera and the symphony. He spent his bachelor years attending Metropolitan Opera and Symphony performances. Once a family man he would enjoy his music at home on full volume blasting opera and classical throughout the house, no matter the time of day. His second hobby of gardening was his true moments of outdoor peace; every weekend pruning the lush roses, picking weeds and chasing away the woodchuck and deer.
Alan's devotion to the Synagogue, Adath Israel, is unmatched by any other. For over 25 years he acted as Gabbi attending every Friday and Saturday service, often being the first to arrive and the last to leave. He led as president, vice president, and Hebrew school teacher. He personally knew all the families and treated all like loved ones. He volunteered his time willingly, with honor and purpose.
Alan is survived by his wife Sybil, his two daughters Caroline and Sarah, his granddaughters Charlotte and Violet, and his sister Leona.
The family asks for donations to be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
