Obituary for Robert P. Otten
Robert (Bob) Peter Otten, SR., 85, of Middlebury, CT passed away August 30, after long illnesses.
He was born September 4, 1933 I Glendale, Queens, NY to Albert and Barbara (Greenfelder) Otten.
Bob was a graduate of Lasalle Academy, NYC and Manhattan College, Bronx, NY in 1955 majoring in math/physics. He was a recipient of a basketball scholarship when Manhattan’s home court was Madison Square Garden. He was elected to Manhattan College’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
After graduation, a position at Remington Rand and Consolidated Edison allowed Bob to be one of the first employees to work with the original UNIVAC computers, the world’s first totally electronic computer.
Returning to the New York area from Boston, he was employed by the Reader’s Digest in Pleasantville, for 27 years in various executive positions in computers and as Vice President of Corporate Distribution working with the United States Postal Commission. Bob traveled extensively for the Digest. He retired in 1986 but continued as a consultant. He spent his retirement years with basketball, coaching, golf (including a coveted hole-in-one) and sailing. Bob lived in South Salem and Katonah, NY for 47 years before morning to Middlebury in 2006.
On September 3, 1955, Bob married Loisclaire Scofield of Katonah, NY. She predeceased him on September 29, 1979. Also predeceasing him were his parents, brother Albert and his wife Frances and their son, Albert Jr., and sister-in-law Sherryl Waterman.
On October 10, 1981 Bob married Rebecca Rich Waterman in Camden, Maine. She survives him as do daughters, Barbara of NYC and Christine (Allan) of Tampa, FL and sons, Robert P. Jr, of Windham, NY Derek of Binghamton, NY and Justin (Danielle) of Lansing, MI and twelve grandchildren, Kelcey, Hannah, Quinn, Charlotte, Connor, Olivia, Jordan, Mallory, Emma, Sadie, Ella and Maddalyn.
He is also survived by three nieces, seven nephews, brother-in-law Robert Waterman, sister-in-law Sarah (John) Crockett.
There will be no services. Interment will be in Camden, Maine at the convenience of the family.
