Patricia Ann Smith, 86 of Southbury died at Pomperaug Woods on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. She was the wife of the late Robert Lee Smith.
Mrs. Smith was born September 18, 1931 in Vestal, NY, the daughter of the late Victor and Anne Wilkerson. She had lived in Rye and Bedford, NY before moving to Southbury in 1995. Mrs. Smith received a bachelor’s degree from Albany State Teachers College (SUNY) and a master’s degree Teachers College Columbia University.
Mrs. Smith taught high school English in Vestal, NY where she met her husband who worked for IBM. Subsequently, they moved to metropolitan NY where she raised two sons while earning her master’s degree and pursuing a variety of work experiences. Mrs. Smith was a substitute teacher in Rye New York and then became an adjunct professor of English – Westchester Community College. Later in her career, Mrs. Smith worked at Putnam Hospital and Northern Westchester Hospital (Mt. Kisco, NY), where she was appointed the Director of Volunteers. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Southbury, an avid reader and loved to play bridge with her friends.
Mrs. Smith leaves two sons, Robert Smith Jr. and his wife Diane, of Jersey City, NJ, David Smith and his wife, Donna, of Port Chester, NY, two granddaughters, Lindsay Basting (her husband John) and Margaret Smith, a grandson, Matthew Smith and a brother, Robert Wilkerson.
A Memorial Service for Mrs. Smith will be held at 11 am on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 761 King Street, Rye Brook, NY. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org/involved/donate/memorial-giving. The Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 Main Street North, is in charge of arrangements.
