Muriel Gushue, formerly of Woodbury, Connecticut, passed away on August 17, 2018 while a resident at the Lutheran Home of Southbury. Born on January 11, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York, Ms. Gushue was predeceased by her parents, George Gushue and Anna Wade Gushue; by her brothers George and Joseph; and by her sisters Mary Loretta (Arthur) Rohs and Sr. Mary Rita Gushue. Her niece, several nephews, and many great nieces and great nephews survive her.
Ms. Gushue attended the College of New Rochelle as an art major. Following graduation, Ms. Gushue drew display ads for newspaper advertisers, and eventually became an illustrator for Terrytoons cartoon enterprises, drawing such well known cartoon characters as Mighty Mouse, Heckyl and Jeckyl and Felix the Cat.
She continued her education at the University of Hartford to earn a master’s degree in art education, which she applied skillfully at Watertown High School in their Art Department for 17 years. After retirement, she utilized her art talent at the Southbury Public Library, where she will be remembered for illustrating their many displays, posters, newsletters and program flyers.
Family will receive friends from 8:45 – 9:45 am, Friday August 24, 2018 at Munson Lovetere Funeral Home, 2 School St. Woodbury and then process to St. Teresa of Avila Church, 146 Main St. S., Woodbury for a 10 am Funeral Mass. Burial will follow at New North Cemetery, 87 Washington Ave, Woodbury. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Southbury Public Library in her memory would be greatly appreciated.
