To Miriam Splain's Family;
I would like to express my sincere condolences for your loss and let you know that Miriam ("Mrs. Splain" in 7th grade: 1971), was a special and beloved teacher. Her English class included a study of poems and song lyrics. Most memorable for me was when we listened to and learned all the lyrics to "American Pie" by Don McLean. That experience... of studying the words and discussing their context in our history, literature, politics and culture, marked the beginning of my love of poetry and of learning the lyrics of many hundreds of songs from the singers and songwriters of that time.... To this day, when I hear American Pie, I think of her and am grateful for her kindness and her stern insistence that we challenge ourselves and learn in her class.
And then, how fortunate that I would become a teacher-colleague of hers in 1981.
Thank you Mrs. Splain. Rest in peace.

I taught with Miriam for a year early in my career, and she made a permanent impression on me and my teaching. What a beautiful woman and excellent teacher. How wonderful she was in your life so long

Mrs. Splain was my seventh-grade English teacher at Somers Middle School. She is one of the teachers who inspired me to become a writer; all these years later, I still recall how she had our class analyze Simon & Garfunkel song lyrics! In addition, she was a thoughtful colleague and friend to my mother Peg, a fellow SMS teacher who taught down the hall. My mother and I are very sorry to learn about Mrs. Splain's passing, and we send our warm regards and condolences to your family.

Dear Family,

My condolences. I taught with Miriam for many years at the Somers Junior High/Middle School. She was a friend, colleague and mentor. Miriam was such a wonderful classy person and teacher. She combined an easy motherly air, yet 'get it done correctly' way about her. I recall our many conversations regarding union work and gathering for our building annual Christmass party at her place the year Patti and l were engaged. I will always keep mamy fond memories of her. God bless.

I feel so sad because a mother, a grandmother is passed away. We all cherish our mothers, especially the ones who are so loving & caring and the ones who scatifice a lot of their comfort for the sake of their children, and the ones who give and give without any condition. That was how mariam was . God bless her soul . She will be remembered always.

I was a lucky "extended family" member whenever Larry and Miriam came to see Mark and Barb and the children in Stinson Beach...sometimes Mark's sisters and husbands and so many exuberant and growing grand...and then, great grandchildren, often over great food and conversation and wonderful, wonderful times. I so enjoyed cooking for Larry and Miriam.
I felt so lucky in the moment to be included among them all, especially always warm and gracious Miriam. Please accept my condolences, realizing that her's was a life well lived in which she was appreciated and beloved by many. Carole
