Mary Steinberg Obituary

Mary Katherine Steinberg, 73, died Monday, February 5, 2018 at her home.  She was born in Mineola, New York on September 17, 1944, to the late John O. and Katherine (Belknap) Steinberg.  In January 1975, she came to live at the Southbury Training School at the age of thirty.

Mary’s parents made every attempt to find her the best training programs and support her to the best of their ability.  With this goal in mind, they eventually moved to Heritage Village so that Mary could obtain the benefits of what the Southbury Training School could offer. Prior to her admission to STS, Mary attended the Martha Lloyd School in Troy, Pennsylvania during 1948, the Nassau Day School in Hempstead, New York from 1949 to 1957; The Training School at Vineland, New Jersey from 1957 to 1962; The Kiefer Training Center, Lancaster, Pennsylvania 1962-1967; and The Suffolk State School, Melville, New York 1967-1975.

Prior to her decline in health, Ms. Steinberg had been fond of dancing.  She enjoyed working with beads, listening to music, having her nails done, taking walks during nice weather, attending picnics, and dining out. Previously, Ms. Steinberg had been involved in the Kennedy Center-Project Act day program, and most recently an in-home day program.  Ms. Steinberg was well cared for by the loving staff at STS.  Her family would like to thank the residential and medical staff at Southbury Training School for their compassionate care.

Besides her parents, Ms. Steinberg also was predeceased by her stepmother, Margaret Steinberg who had served as guardian following Mary’s father’s passing.  Ms. Steinberg is survived by her first cousins: George Hagel of Palm Coast, FL; Robert Hagel of Palm Coast, FL; Claire Kranz of Hamburg, NJ; Mary DeWitt Straub of Georgia; Dorothy Straughn Beveridge of Belize; Charles Straughn of NC; Arthur Straughn of TN; William Straughn of NH.  Mary is also survived by her guardians: Ellen Karl of Colts Neck, NJ and Glenda Hoppe of Weehawken, NJ.  Mary also leaves many dear friends and caregivers who worked with her over the years.

Arrangements are through Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, Woodbury.   Burial and a graveside service will be at Pine Grove South Cemetery, Waterboro, Maine. A memorial service at STS is planned for a later date.  Memorial contributions in Mary’s name can be made to the STS Foundation, P.O. Box 872, Southbury, CT 06488-0901
