He was born in Washington, CT on December 21, 1929, son of Clifford and Mary (Coburn) Zumpf.  He lived all his life on River Road with his family and was pre-deceased by his siblings; Floyd Zumpf, Agnes Sidella and Frederick who died in combat in WWII. The Gage-Zumpf Legion Hall in Washington was dedicated to his memory.

Ed worked for the Washington Supply Company followed by various estate caretaking duties later in life. He served on the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Republican Committee and as Deputy Sheriff. He was an active member of the Washington Fire Department and the Washington Lions Club for over 50 years. His ERZ license plate was well-known in Washington.
