Mrs. Doris Ellen Bray Platt, 91 of Southbury, Ct passed away unexpectedly, Monday, December 30th. Born March, 13, 1928 in Cheshire, Ct., to Albert and Grace Bray, she was predeceased by her husband, John Raymond Platt, (Ray) , her son, Johnny, grandson, Ryan Ruscoe as well as her siblings Robert, Helen and Richard Bray.
Doris grew up in Cheshire, attending Crosby High School and Larson College (Quinnipiac). She married Ray, also of Cheshire in 1948 and had two children, Pamela and John.
In 1965, Ray and Doris bought the old Platt family farm on Purchase Brook Road in Southbury. For the next few years, as a family doing much of the work themselves, they brought the old homestead back to life. In the late 70s the site was home to Wisteria Hill Farm Nursery for 13 years and then again in 2004. Doris moved to Heritage Village in 2007 where she remained living independently until her death.
Doris began working in 1967 for the Mitchell Insurance Agency in Southbury as office manager and continued to work for fifty years. Developing close relationships with so many customers, their children and grandchildren over the years, she retired in March of 2019 at the age of 91. She was also a member of the South Britain Congregational Church. In her younger years she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, enjoyed the monthly "in betweeners" supper club and chaired both the churches Summer Smorgasbord and Holiday Yuletide fair. Until recently she donated the 4 holiday wreaths in loving memory of her husband, Ray.
Doris was known as a kind, selfless and gracious lady who only saw the best in people and was always there to listen. An avid reader of often two or three books a week up until her passing, she was also a birder, gardener and as many family and friends would tell, made the best potato salad on earth for countless summer picnics around her pool.
Throughout the years she enjoyed many family vacations in Maine, Cape Cod, Block Island and more recently, Florida.
Doris is survived by her sister Jane Bray Geiger of Randolph Vt., daughter Pamela Platt Ruscoe and her husband Neil of Roxbury Ct, grand children Emily Ruscoe and her fiancé Prince Levy of Eureka California , Kelly Ruscoe and his wife Shermin Razmehr Ruscoe of San Diego California, great grandson Sebastian Ruscoe of Saratoga NY, her kitty cat, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 18th, 11 am at South Britain Congregational Church in Southbury Ct. Please share online memories and condolences at www.munsonloveterefuneralhome.com or to Pamela Ruscoe and Family; Po Box 264, Roxbury Ct 06783.
