Welcome to the memorial page for

David B. Monckton

February 1, 1947 ~ March 22, 2017 (age 70) 70 Years Old

David B. Monckton, 70, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017.  He was the husband for 46 years of Cathy (Manke) Monckton.

Dave was born February 1, 1947, the son of the late Richard and Eleanor (Ball) Monckton and grew up in Bethlehem, CT.  He was a graduate of Woodbury High School as well as Hartford State Technical College and the University of New Haven, from which he earned Associate’s and Bachelor’s Degrees in Civil Engineering.  Dave worked for the CT Department of Transportation in the D.O.T. Testing Lab, as a Town Aid Construction Inspector and Senior Highway Engineer, and later served as both Assistant Director and Director of Public Works for the Town of Woodbury.  He always took great pride in his work and the people with whom he spent a career caring for the highways and byways, trees, sidewalks and people throughout the State.  Dave especially took joy in the many little things that he quietly did with his work, including decorating a town Christmas tree, the “Touch a Truck” program with the Woodbury Library, Hazardous Waste Day collections, distributing emergency supplies after storms and trying to be a friendly face around town.  Also in his professional career, Dave was very involved with the CT Association of Street and Highway Officials (CASHO), with which he served as a board member, president and gleefully took part in public works conventions, equipment shows and the annual Snowplow Rodeo.

Dave was also a lifelong volunteer, serving as a faithful member of North Congregational Church as well as with numerous community organizations including the Bethlehem Fair Society, Woodbury Shade Tree and Sidewalk Committee, Woodbury-Bethlehem Youth Council, Woodbury Emergency Management Committee, the Old Woodbury Historical Society and many more.  He also was a lifelong Boy Scout, first as a scout and then scoutmaster of Troop 54, an extended family of many who Dave lovingly referred to as “his boys,” mentors and wonderful friends.

The Monckton family would like to thank everyone who loved and cared for Dave and helped along his journey including Woodbury’s wonderful first responders, Hartford Healthcare and Companions and Homemakers staff and community of friends.

In addition to his wife, Dave is survived by his daughters Jamie and Lindsey, his sister, Dianne Marco, his brother, Donald Monckton, and a loving family and extended family of dear friends.

Calling hours will be Sunday, March 26, from 4 – 7 p.m. and a funeral will be Monday, March 27 at 11 a.m., both at North Congregational Church, 11 Main Street North, Woodbury.  Burial at the New North Cemetery will immediately follow the funeral.
