Clyde Talmadge Gatlin, 88, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2019 at his home in Southbury, CT. Clyde was born April 16, 1930 in Newberry, South Carolina, son of the late Luther E. and Eunice (Boggero) Gatlin.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Newberry College, South Carolina in 1951, a Master of Arts from Duke University in 1953 and his New York State Teacher’s Certificate from Columbia University. He taught English for many years in the New York Public School System.  After the end of the Korean War he served in the U.S. Army in Japan. He became enamored of that country and its people, forging several friendships. He returned again to Japan in 1971 and kept ongoing correspondence with several friends from there.  Clyde was always athletic during his lifetime enjoying horseback riding, tennis and skiing. Up until his death he could be found in the gym and taking long walks around Heritage Village. He was a lifelong collector of antiques and in his retirement he became a recognized antiques dealer participating in many antique shows and auctions throughout New England and along the east coast.  He is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends far and near.  A memorial service will take place at a later date.
