Alan Gilmore Palmer

Alan Gilmore Palmer of Southbury died on May 1, 2017 after a long illness. Alan was the beloved Son of the late Paul A. Palmer and Catherine Gilmore Palmer. Alan was born on October 14th, 1958 in Lockport, New York. He was a graduate of Southbury High School and held degrees in Hotel Management from Paul Smiths College and the University of New Haven. His career included managerial positions in the restaurant and lumber industry throughout his lifetime.

Alan was a lover of the outdoors, an accomplished hiker and backpacker. He was a mountain climber of many peaks in the Adirondack and Appalachian mountains as well as in the Pacific Northwest. The latter as part of a research team for geophysical energy during a summertime learning experience in Oregon.

Alan was a member and served many years as a Monitor for the Appalachian Mountain Club Trail, CT Chapter, affiliated with the Department of Interior, National Park Service and also as a Monitor of Endangered Species for the AMC. He was a gifted artist and a historian well versed in both the Revolutionary and Civil War periods. He was a member of the Mayflower Society as a direct descendant of Governor William Bradford. He was also a descendant of Lt. William Palmer, a member of Myles Standish’s Constabulary of Plymouth Plantation. Alan was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Reverend Ebenezer Baldwin Chapter with patriots on both his paternal and maternal side.

Besides his Mother, he leaves his sister Virginia Palmer-Skok and her husband Andrew Skok of Monroe, his brother, Randolph Palmer and his wife, Nancy of New Hyde Park, nieces Narissa Palmer, Leanna Hastings and husband B.J., nephew Jason Palmer all of New York City, his Uncle Lawrence Palmer of Santa Barbara CA, and Cousins Sidney Gilmore of Auburn, N.Y., and Robert Gilmore of Texas.

In honoring his wishes there will be no calling hours and the Funeral Service will be held at the Church of the Epiphany on 262 Main Street North in Southbury with the Reverend Joseph Shepley officiating on Thursday 4th at 11:00 A.M.

                     A graveside service following the church service will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery in Southbury.  In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Alan’s memory may be made to the Church of the Epiphany.
