Robert E Van Tassel

Robert (Bob) Van Tassel, 83 of Southbury, CT passed away on Saturday, February 25. He was born on May 14, 1933 in White Plains NY to Amelia and Edwin Van Tassel.

Bob is survived by his wife Carole of 58 years and daughter Jill. Bob was a loving husband, father and friend to all.

Bob joined the White Plains Volunteer Fire Department, East Side Engine Co. 3 in 1951. He was an active member up until the time he moved out of state. He was elected 1st Assistant Chief of the Department, President of East side Engine Co. 3 and President of the Relief Association.

After moving to Heritage Village in 1998, Bob joined the Southbury Volunteer Fireman’s Association where he was an active member until his illness curtailed his activities. He served as president of the Association and was an active member of several committees.

He was also very active in Heritage Village. He volunteered to drive the village mini bus. He served as Chairman of the Safety Committees, as well as the FFC and Rules Adherence Committee and was a member of the Documentation Committee. He was Past President of the H.V. Masters Association and served as 1st Trustee of Condo 17 and later as 2nd Trustee.

Bob’s love of aviation and flying led him to join the WRAMS (Westchester Radio Aero Modelers) Club in 1971. Bob’s fondness for building model airplanes, tanks and boats goes back to his childhood.

Flying model airplanes was fun but learning to fly a real airplane was on his bucket list and upon retiring, he took to the skies and accomplished it.

In his working years, Bob was a Physical Plant Director for Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY as well as working for the Pleasantville and Hastings-on-Hudson, NY school districts.

There will be a Celebration of Life a future date.
