Miriam Splain passed away on July 8, 2017, in West Hartford, CT.  Miriam was born on August 7, 1922, to William and Stella Stautberg in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She was a proud graduate of Mercy High School and Edgecliff College in Cincinnati.  In 1945 she married Lawrence Splain who shared her love of literature and writing.  Miriam was an English teacher for 30 years including 25 years at Somers Middle School in Somers, NY.  She was a dedicated and engaged teacher who cared about her students.  Years later former students sent her letters describing the impact she had on them.  After retiring in 1992 Miriam and Larry enjoyed their retirement years in Woodbury, CT, volunteering at St. Teresa’s Church, traveling to visit friends and family, and always reading and discussing novels, essays and poetry.  After Larry’s death in 2006 Miriam relocated to Middlewoods Assisted Living in Farmington, and then to the Hebrew Home in West Hartford.  The family very much appreciates the compassionate care Miriam received by the Hebrew Home staff, as well as by the Masonicare Hospice aides and nurses.  Miriam’s passion was her family – She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, sister and aunt who acknowledged every birthday and anniversary with a card and celebrated every milestone and accomplishment.  She had a special love for her grandchildren, each of whom she dearly treasured.  She will be missed by her children Kathy Partovi, Mark, Julie (Richard Bartell), Maureen Iacono (Bruce), and Martha (Vincent Peppe), her six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her beloved sisters Claire Kortekamp and Martha Ernst as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Burial is private. If you wish to honor Miriam, please consider a donation to Masonicare Hospice, at www.masonicare.org.

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all…
