Mario A. Mesi, 77, of Woodbury Hill died Tuesday November 29th unexpectedly at The Hearth in Southbury. Mario was born January 17, 1939 in Manhattan, son of the late Joseph and Josephine (Scaccia) Mesi.

Mario was a philanthropist who had been a school teacher in Weston. He continued to support education by establishing scholarships at Westconn and several universities in New Jersey providing financial assistance to music, nursing and LBGT students. He liked to track their progress by receiving letters and reports from the recipients.

He worked as an usher at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Homes for over 10 years; a job he excelled at because of his warm nature and generous spirit. After his retirement, Mario continued to dedicate himself to helping people. He had many devoted listeners on Sunday mornings where for more than 25 years he was a classical music host at WMNR Radio in Monroe. He was a longtime volunteer at the Southbury Training School Thrift Shop and at the Counseling Center at New York's St. Vincent Hospital. Mario served on the Connecticut Choral Society Scholarship Committee and was an enthusiastic volunteer for the choral group.

Mario was predeceased by his partner Joel Kannengeiser, his sister Millicent Ratta and his niece Janice Binnes. He leaves many longtime friends and enjoyed gardening and birding at The Hearth where he was the 'go to person' for residents needing advice on their plants! Everyone had a chance to appreciate the variety of birds who flocked to The Hearth's bird feeders which Mario kept stocked. His presence enhanced the lives of everyone he touched.

Services: A memorial mass will be held Saturday January 21, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Teresa of Avila Church in January 2017. Following the mass there will be a catered luncheon in Siedel Hall at the Church.
