Joyce M. Thomas, 79, passed away peacefully on December 20 at River Glen Health Care Center in Southbury with her daughter, Susan, nearby.
Joyce was the widow of Ferris (Bud) Thomas and the daughter of the late Floyd and Victoria (Britain) Mac Donald.
She was born on June 5, 1938 in Waterbury. Raised in Woodbury and Oakville, Joyce graduated from of Woodbury High School and was employed by the Louise Shop, the Southbury Training School, Don Heavens Chevrolet, Pepperidge Farm, Stephen's and Salon De Silva.
A 20 year member of the Girl Scouts, Joyce was a troop leader and trainer for adults. She was a past member of Eastern Star and the Woodbury Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. In addition, Joyce was active in the Woman's Club of Woodbury and a life-long member of the North Congregational Church.
Her hobbies included creating award-winning crafts and dried flower arrangements.
Joyce is survived by a daughter, Susan (Thomas) Rapillo of Lowell, MA, a son, Ferris Scott Thomas of Newnan, GA, and a step-daughter, Sandra (Thomas) Johnson of Lakewood, WA. She is predeceased by her step-son, Robert Howard Thomas, who passed away in November. She was a grandmother to one, step-grandmother to six and step-great grandmother to eleven.
In addition to her children and grandchildren she also leaves behind a sister, Jane (Mac Donald) Mac Lellan of Brookfield, CT, as well as, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank everyone in Woodbury and Southbury who helped Joyce out in the past few years. Whether it was giving her a ride, lending a hand at the transfer station, assisting with groceries, or simply holding the door for her, it's all been very much appreciated.
Calling hours are from 9:30am until 10:45am on Friday, January 5th in the vestibule of the North Congregational Church in Woodbury with a celebration of her life following at 11:00am in the sanctuary. Burial at the New North Cemetery immediately follows the service. All are invited back to the North Church parlor for coffee, cookies and conversation after the burial.
