Grace Marie Greene

Grace Marie Greene, 90 of Woodbury CT died peacefully Sunday, March 12, 2017.  She was the wife of Richard B. Greene.

Grace Marie was born September 23, 1926, in Bridgeport CT, the daughter of Grace Marie (Downs) Smith and Robert C. Smith Sr.  She grew up in Morris Plains NJ and graduated from Morristown NJ High School in 1944.  She also graduated from the New Jersey State Teachers College (B.S. 1948).  Grace Marie’s values and work ethic were evident in every aspect of her life and career. 

She was certified to teach Kindergarten through 8th grade and taught in North Syracuse NY, Mendham Township NJ, and Woodbury and Bethlehem CT.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Bethlehem where she enjoyed Father Michael’s sermons and the beautiful flowers each week.  Church has been a constant in Grace Marie’s life, even in her young years.  Her family was integral in supporting St. Paul’s Church in Morris Plains NJ.  Grace Marie learned many early life lessons and her involvement in the church influenced her development as a person and educator.

Grace was an active member of the Woodbury Women’s Club for 55 years as well as the Pomperaug Valley Garden Club, serving as president of both organizations for consecutive 3 year terms.

Mrs. Greene’s great joy in life was watching and participating in the raising of her four sons, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  The most recent great grandson was born on Christmas Day 2016, which brought Grace Marie great happiness as her father’s birthday was on Christmas Day in 1895.  During the summer months she could often be found spending time at the family vacation home on Cape Cod, adoring her family and entertaining friends and relatives.  She enjoyed the ocean from an early age as was a life guard in her youth.  In fact, in her lifeguarding days was when she first met Richard and he asked her out for a date.

Besides her husband of 69 years she leaves her four sons and daughters in law, Gerald C. and Louise Greene of Divide CO, R. Alan and Christy Greene of Dublin NH, Robert C. and Carla Greene of Stratham NH, and W. Andrew and Susan Greene of Woodbury; ten grandchildren and five great grandsons, Elizabeth (Greene) and Erich Rentz and their new born son Ian of Minneapolis MN, David and Brook Greene of Woodland Park CO and their two sons Sam and Abe, Brian Greene and his wife Ariana  Miguelez of Long Island City, NY and their two sons Santi and Isaac, Sarah Greene and her husband Ross Miranti of Long Island City NY, Evan Greene of Chestnut Hill MA, Victoria Greene of Somerville MA, Allison and Julia Greene both of Stratham NH, and Kate and Andrew Greene of Woodbury.

She was predeceased by her brother Robert Curts Smith Jr. Services were held Saturday at Christ Epsicopal Church in Bethlehem. Burial was in New North Cemetery, Woodbury. Online condolences may be made through www.munsonloveterefuneralhome.com
