George G Combs

January 25, 1926 ~ June 24, 2017 (age 91) 91 Years Old


George Gillespie Combs of Sun City Center, Florida peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2017.  He was 91.  He is predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Dolores.

George was the tenth child born to Harry and Genevieve Combs on January 25, 1926 in Bridgewater, CT.

George was a World War II veteran and earned a Combat Infantry Badge and a Purple Heart during his deployment in Europe at the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. Upon his return to the States he worked at Consolidated Diamond Tool in Yonkers, NY and then at the US Post Office where he rose to the position of Manager of the Vehicle Maintenance Facility in White Plains, NY. The VMF was named a model facility under his leadership and he was sought after as a role model and mentor for other facilities.

He married the late Dolores Fandel in 1949, and they lived together and raised two children in Yonkers and Brewster NY. Upon his retirement, he and his wife lived in Heritage Village in Southbury CT.  He was very active in the Garden Club and spent many happy hours in his many gardens. George and Dolores also enjoyed traveling extensively in their retirement years.

George moved to Sun City Center Florida in 2014 to be closer to his children.

He is survived by two older sisters Nioma Feeney and Edythe Heelan, by his son Dr. Donald W. Combs and his wife Patricia, his daughter Deborah G. Maguire and her husband Major General (ret) Thomas P Maguire, Jr.  as well as three grandchildren, Lindsay Maguire, Thomas Maguire, Daniel Maguire and his wife Jasmine, four great grandchildren, Dolores, Evelyn, Abigail and Josiah Maguire.

He embodied the ideals of the Greatest Generation. Hard work, integrity and patriotism and had an undying love for his wife and family.  He was an avid baseball fan who followed the New York and San Francisco Giants. He also loved to support UCONN Girls Basketball.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, 2 School Street, Woodbury, CT. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. immediately followed by burial at North Cemetery also in Woodbury.
